Nice. I used to be a practicing geologist many years ago, in remote Australia. Indeed I am still here, living in Alice Springs in the centre of the continent. We have very few volcanic outcrops around here bar a few 500mya dolerite dykes, ours is an ancient, stable eroding landscape of 800mya metamorphosed sedimentary basins overlying 1.6bya metamorphics. When did you start collecting Philippino stamps? I have bitten off a large set with volcanics, too many!

I suspect this is Mt Baco on Mindoro island. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mounts_Iglit%E2%80%93Baco_National_Park It is the last stronghold of the Tamaraw. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tamaraw The geology of the Mt Baco region is complex including metamorphics, sedimentary formations and some volcanics. From my quick research its not clear if Mt Baco is a remnant volcano or simply a generic peak within a metamorphic/sedimentary mountain range. https://openjicareport.jica.go.jp/pdf/10304657_02.pdf

I've had a look at your 'Unidentified or Possible Volcanoes' section. I offer a few possibilities: I'm pretty sure this is Mariveles (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Mariveles). Our lady of Guidance church is on the eastern shores of Manila Bay https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Our_Lady_of_Guidance Mariveles and adjacent cones lie opposite the city of Manila across Manila Bay. The profile is a close match to that on the stamp. What do you think?

Hello Mike, lovely to hear from another volcano stamp enthusiast. Your website is fabulous, I love the stories you've included with each stamp, particularly the fairy stories. I have been to many Indonesian volcanoes and they all have fairy stories associated with them, including a few stamps. I have added yours to my database, thankyou. I've attached my Excel list of Philippino volcano stamps, it'd be great if you can cast your eyes over it for inaccurate or missing stamps.

Aaland 1993. 2,00mk. Diabase dyke. This stamp shows a dolerite or diabase dyke (diabase is the preferred name in North America, while dolerite is the preferred name in the rest of the English-speaking world). Such dykes occur in regions of crustal extension and often occur in swarms of hundreds of individual dykes or sills radiating from a single volcanic centre. Dolerite is a mafic, holocrystalline, subvolcanic rock equivalent to volcanic basalt or plutonic gabbro. Can anyone provide more info?

Indonesia 1983. 110rp. Krakatoa eruption. Indonesia 1983. 275rp Krakatoa tsunami. This week's Tonga eruption and tsunami are unfortunately not unique. Krakatoa had exactly the same sequence in 1883. The caldera collapsed, seawater poured into the magma chamber and the blast was heard in Perth 3,000km away. The resultant tsunami destroyed 300 towns and villages, and killed more than 36,000 people. Check out aerial photos below of the Tonga caldera collapsing just before it erupted. Grenada 2015. $3.25 minisheet. Kick 'em Jenny volcano. The Tongan Ha'apai eruption was triggered by a landslide that collapsed the volcano's caldera into the sea. This allowed seawater to pour into the magma chamber, causing a super-heated 'phreatomagmatic' steam eruption. Tonga 1897. 2/- Ha'apai (Haabai) volcano stamp Check out this beautiful 1897 Tonga stamp. It is the Ha'apai volcano that went off with a bang a few days ago 😮. The islands are but a glimpse of the full volcano that rises 2km from the sea floor. The photo below shows the ash plume starting to collapse upon itself to create a pyroclastic surge across the sea.
